But it IS about the techniques, in that the techniques can be applied effectively. A lot of martial artists like me dropped their old styles hard when they “moved on” but they needn’t. The techniques can work! It’s just getting them to work involves way more than they were led to believe. Not only to learn how to use them in a fight but to be able to sort the effective techniques from the ineffective ones. Bring aliveness to any martial art, and it will improve or change into something unrecognizable to what it started as, but actually works.Karate Retro Taekwondo Martial Arts Boys T-Shirt I do feel the TMAs do have value as a kind of “reservoir” of knowledge and as a hobby. But, the problem is that we cannot know if the knowledge that is passed down in forms is workable without using aliveness in each generation to verify what works and prune the shit that inevitably slips in.

Well, like I said. TMAers pissed in their own pool when they decided to market themselves towards the wussies. And now they find that their brand’s reputation has been compromised beyond salvation. If we don’t acknowledge all the wrestlers, judoka, and boxers that had been doing that long before the Gracies, then yes, the Gracies totally pioneered it. Karate Retro Taekwondo Martial Arts Boys T-Shirt Thing is Judoka and Boxers didn’t publicly set up a spectacle that showed how weak many Martial Arts were at teaching people how to fight. They would have had the ability to do so, but they didn’t and certainly not at such a huge influential scale. Source for that claim? Because boxers and wrestlers used to take on all comers as sideshow attractions at fairs.

I don’t know why you were downvoted for that comment it was a fair one. I never said they didn’t fight other people just that they didn’t have anywhere near the same revealing spectacle as the Gracie’s managed. The impact the Gracie’s had on the martial arts community with the UFC was huge and the ones Karate Retro Taekwondo Martial Arts Boys T-Shirt in at fairs just didn’t have the same level of impact. Ah, but there’s the rub. The difference is that the Gracies had mass media like the internet and TV. Back then the “take on all comers” crowd didn’t. I think that while BJJ is very important and a game changer, the real force behind martial arts revelation is not so much the Gracies as it was their use of media and technology and we shouldn’t really treat that as some kind of great achievement by them.
