Thank you for saying this. Every time some conversation about money comes around on reddit, people trot out the old “barely middle class in NYC/SF” even if the amount is like $10,000,000! Just because those cities have been turned into playgrounds for extremely rich people doesn’t mean you’re “poor” for making $120,000.I May Be Old But I’m Still Pretty Damn Cool T-Shirt Yeah it’s annoying. It really comes down to choice. It’s like, people forget that millions of people in NYC live and raise kids on much less.

Sure, your combined income of $300K might not let you rent a 3BR in the building of your choice on the UES and send your two kids to the Chapin School, while letting you save and go on a couple vacations a year. But that’s a choice. On a small note,I May Be Old But I’m Still Pretty Damn Cool T-Shirt I can’t afford a decent 2BR apartment in my neighborhood of Astoria, but I can one neighborhood over in Woodside. But I like living in Astoria, so I still rent here and it’s a choice.

People also don’t seem to understand that this “middle class” in these cities will accumulate net worth more quickly that a middle class person in Atlanta, Nashville, st. Louis, etc. I May Be Old But I’m Still Pretty Damn Cool T-Shirt Their standard of living is the “same” but a family making 300k And paying down any sort of mortgage in SF or NYC will have oodles more equity and overall wealth. These families then go and retire somewhere where there’s a lower cost of living, and they will be effectively high class.
