Lots of times. It’s pretty chill—I always worked on those days but everyone had a good attitude. We would usually rally up as a shop/crew for chow hall Turkey on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Al Udeid used to do an NYE party that was pretty horrifically cringe. I actually kind of like being deployed on the holidays. Done it twice in the last 5ish years, and another deployment in the other half of the year.

Depends greatly on the shop and how close you get/how much you bond. The next time I was deployed during that time (my 3rd), it was a much smaller shop, and we didn’t have as many people who cared as much about the holidays, so it wasn’t much different than any other period of the deployment.

I was deployed to Balad for all of those holidays in 2008. They had a pretty kickers haunted house for Halloween. For Turkey Day and Christmas they had a fantastic meal with all the fixings at the DFAC. For New Years, they threw a little bash at the Rec Center (sans alcohol). When I was in Afghanistan, we spent Halloween night, thanksgiving night, Christmas night, and New Years’ night in a bunker because of an incoming attack. Thanksgiving was the worst because we got attacked while my friends and I were walking to the chow hall and when it was all clear by 2 AM, the chow hall was closed.
