Awesome write up, encountered a “forgeiner but stuck here” with an American guy in Medellin last year. Wasn’t aware of the scam but knew it was bullshit based on how bad this guy looked/smelled. I’m not sure if this falls under security tips, but one thing I wish I was more aware of before backpacking through Colombia and Peru was encountering wild dogs, usually in packs. This was definitely exclusive to the more developing areas, but had a couple occasions where I was charged walking around at night. Even if you don’t see a rock, just reach down as if you are picking up a rock and then pull your empty hand back as if you’re going to throw it at the dogs and they’ll run away. I’ve used this more times than I would like for wild dogs.

I have a technique in which I write down the address of the place I’m staying as well as any other details I need, put them on piece of paper and stick it inside my sock. If my phone etc gets stolen, I have something to communicate to people. I’ve never had to use it yet but it’s always my go to strategy. That also links back to your hiding things in your hotel room. It’s quite easy to stray off the regular path and not know how to get back Air Force Veteran With American Flag For Veteran Day T-Shirt to your hotel, if you then don’t have your phone to use as map it gets even harder. I’ll get downvoted by the younger folk here, but if you don’t use your phone’s map in the first place, you’ll strengthen your sense of direction and have an easier time finding your way home later.

Phone maps are for when you have an urgent appointment at a specific time in an unfamiliar city. Otherwise try to rely on looking at a printed or posted map before you set out. Study it and commit the spatial relationships between landmarks to memory. It’s a small investment in time that pays huge dividends in mastery of your surroundings. I used to be a human homing pigeon when it comes to navigation. But ever since map apps emerged, I’m rubbish at it! I guess that’s just the way of things with technology. Air Force Veteran With American Flag For Veteran Day T-Shirt I also used to memorize phone numbers. Now I can’t tell you a single one! I have solo travelled to most corners of the world over the past 30+ years, sometimes on journeys that lasted for years at a time. The one and only place where I’ve repeatedly had real, meaningful problems with the police being aggressive for no good reason is the USA.
